In September 1998, a virus among pig farmers (associated with a high mortality rate) was first reported in the state of Perak in Malaysia. Dr. Chua investigated and discovered the virus and it was later named, Nipah Virus. The outbreak in Malaysia was controlled through the culling of >1 million pigs.
