My name is Aarti Devi and I am 22 years old...My father, Chnadra Bhan is an educated man. He did double masters from the university in spite of being a dalit. He always is fighting for rights and dignity of the local villagers. About 6 months back, an upper caste man raped a local dalit woman. Police refused to register the case. When my father protested, false case was slapped on him and two others and they were taken in custody. .I went to Sampat Devi and asked her for help. I joined the gang. Led by Sampat Devi, we stormed the police station demanding the release of my father and the other villagers. Police refused to register the case against the rapist. We ended up beating a policeman black and blue with lathis after he refused to register the case. I cannot take injustice lying down. My father is a great inspiration to me, he was very proud when he saw me in a pink saree agitating and raising slogans, rubbing shoulders with Sampat Pal and the rest of the gulabi gang. .Sampat Devi trained me in lathi warfare. She insisted we learn to defend ourselves before we attack someone. The goons and the administration many a times have threatened me (once with a gun as well), but I am not scared of them. Being in the gang gives me the confidence and self-assurance. I go with most of the meetings with Sampat Devi. In most of the operations we carry out, our emphasis is to empower the women, create employment, promote education and thereby uplift the poor and the needy..We are the future of gulabi gang, and we will do whatever it takes to provide equality and justice to the ones who have been deprived of it.
