Significance of Uttar Pradesh in Indian political scene

For many elections after independence in 1947, Uttar Pradesh (U.P.) remained the most influencial to the formation of any government in the capital, New Delhi. If it were a country, with its 190 million inhabitants, this largely populated state could well be sixth largest in the world. It was, and remains, the largest contributor of parliamentarians to the Lok Sabha. The state controls 80 seats of the 545 in India’s parliament, more than any other state in India. Any party that wins big number of votes in U.P., can automatically win a bigger voice in National politics.
