DOCTOR ON CALL

With limited access to health care, the poor in India have to depend on organisations and philanthropists provide for them. The doctors from Medicins Sans Frontiers go deep into the naxal affected villages in Chhattisgarh and set up health care camps to the villagers who have no access to health care. Some of India's leading plastic surgeons leave their busy practise and set up a free plastic surgery camp for the poor and the needy in Maharashtra. Doctors travel for days from one island to the other on a boat to provide medical help to the poor in the river islands of Assam.

With this continuing project, I want to follow many such cases and make a case for how much attention is needed in the health care system in India. I would travel to other parts of the country and spend time with the people who are in similar situations and are struggling to get attention for basic health care. The work will emerge as a series of photographs, and multi-media pieces. It will include interviews and essays about their struggle, and how some are making their relentless efforts to provide health care to the poor that many take for granted.
